Redefining The Meaning Of Success With Nick Vujicic

Nick Vujicic needs no introduction. He is widely recognised all around the world as a living testimony of the power of our human spirit that triumphs over the toughest of life’s physical, mental and emotional struggles.

Behind his ever-friendly smile is a story that never fails to pull the heartstrings of our hearts. Herein lies a soul with an abundance of love for life and the people around him despite his physical lack.

Truly, success without character is self-serving (inward) while success with character is often grounded in values and self-sacrificing (outward). And, the latter often brings greater impact to other people’s lives.

Helen Keller once quoted:

“Character cannot be developed in ease and quiet. Only through experience of trial and suffering can the soul be strengthened; vision cleared; ambition inspired, and success achieved.”

Thanks to Success Resources, Leaderonomics was able to gain some of Vujicic’s insights on his personal experiences in living a life filled with success, gratefulness and compassion.

Here are his responses.

1. How was it like growing up differently from others?

It was very difficult at times to be so uniquely different. With the love of my parents, I was able to conquer my fears, overcome challenges, and embrace who I was and do the best in everything I tried.

2. Who is your role model, and how has this person impacted your life?

In my childhood, it was my parents. I am thankful for their love and support and the foundation they gave me. Apart from them, my wife is my role model too, in how she is loving, patient, strong and courageous. Philip Toth was an encouragement personally to me. While struggling with Lou Gehrig’s disease himself, he touched and gave encouragement to people in a non-profit organisation he started.

3. What was your biggest mistake in life? How has it impacted you as a person?

I think I have made a lot of mistakes. I can’t choose which to talk about really. But no matter what mistakes in life occur – in business, personal life, whatever – my faith in my Creator is what gives me freedom from my mistakes, knowing that He has grace and forgiveness. At times we have to make mistakes to learn some lessons. Sometimes, we learn from others’ mistakes so we don’t make the same ones. However, one mistake I don’t want to make is to be too busy for my family.

4. What is the meaning of success to you, and why?

My definition of success has nothing to do with fame, money, status or title. To me, because of my faith, my family and friends around me, success is knowing who you are, and what you want to accomplish, and going for it to achieve them. It’s also about being thankful for what you have. Success is when you know that no matter what, you are unstoppable.

5. What drives you in life?

My family. And my purpose – trying to make a difference in other people’s lives and growing my faith.

6. What is your purpose in life? Why?

It’s to know God and encourage others to know that heaven is real. Ultimately, there is no one greater to know than your own Creator. Moreoever, everything we have in this life will fade away, except our soul and our relationship with your Maker.

7. Your advice to people who want to emulate your positive outlook in life despite hardships ahead.

I never tell people to just be positive as it’s not that easy. I always encourage people to have hope, because hope doesn’t mean things aren’t hard, or there isn’t any pain. Hope means there is something to look forward to; something to live for; a purpose.

8. In your opinion, what is the greatest gift one can ever give to another?

Love. Love takes on a lot of different forms – grace, patience, encouragement, hope and strength. There is no greater gift than love.

9. How would you like to be remembered, and why?

I want to be remembered as a meek man. A humble, yet powerful and courageous man. I always ask people to pray for me for these things – to remain humble and always be a man of integrity.

10. Your Father’s Day (observed last 19 June) message to all fathers out there.

Remember to have conversations with your children that go beyond school, chores, and the mundane. Spending time with your children is so important. Make them feel encouraged and loved beyond measure. Always try to build on your friendship with your children. Be their parent and also their friend. Listen and share. Make time for not just the big things, but also the little things, daily.
